Character Summary: Jo Courtney is the madam of a 1930's New Orleans bordello. At the end of the film Jo is sentenced to prison, along with her co-conspirators, for her illegal business dealings.

In February 1961, Joan and Barbara Stanwyck were both sent the script of "Walk On The Wild Side." In early April, Barbara Stanwyk was cast in the film. At the time, a news columnist commented that Joan may have declined the film because the character of "Jo" was hinted to be a lesbian.
